How to upgrade
Please follow these step-by-step instructions to upgrade from:
- Runtime Page Optimizer (RPO) to the Website Accelerator (WAX), or
- Earlier version of WAX to the latest WAX service release.
Upgrading only takes a few minutes and no extra configuration is required to run the latest version. All configuration settings from an existing RPO or WAX install will be carried over to the new install upon upgrade.
If you have further questions, not covered here, please email support.
Upgrading is performed site by site. You will need to upgrade each website with a existing RPO or WAX install. |
Upgrading in a Web Farm
Upgrading the WAX in a load balanced environment simply requires you to perform the upgrade steps instructed below on each server. In a Production environment you will need to keep a server node in rotation while you upgrade the other server nodes out of rotation.
WAX.Config Backup
All configuration settings are stored in the WAX.config file and upgrading the WAX will carry over existing settings over to the new install.
Each time you modify the website configuration the WAX will timestamp and save a copy of the WAX.config and Web.Config; [timestamp].WAX.Config, these are found in _WAXbackup folder found inside the site root (and _RPObackup for RPO installs), In a situation where you have need to do a fresh install of the WAX you can always recover the WAX.config from this folder.
To restore a WAX.config for your website, simply rename the file to ” WAX.config” and overwrite any existing file in the site root, if the WAX is at a installed stated on the Website then the configuration settings will take immediate effect.
Step-by-Step: Upgrade WAX
1. Login to your Aptimize account. If you do not have an account please contact us and we will set one up for you.
In your account, click on the 'Downloads' tab and download the WAX installation .MSI file. Run the WAX .msi installer on the target server.

2. Launch the ‘Website Accelerator Configuration Tool’ to configure the WAX. Choose the website you wish to upgrade from the list on the left and click the Upgrade.
[In an event of a popup suggesting a change to be made, please do so to allow the WAX to work optimally]

3. Your Website had now been upgraded to the latest version of the WAX and the status should read:
“Version [version_number] installed. The Aptimize Website Accelerator is working Correctly”
Troubleshooting
If the Status reads “Installation Error”, there is an error that has prevented the WAX upgrade. Under the “There is a problem” section there will be an error code and a description of the error. Follow the instructions listed here to report troubleshooting information to the Aptimize team.
Alternatively you can try to reinstall the WAX on the website: you will need to press the Uninstall button to remove the WAX on your website then press Install button to reinstall the WAX. You can always restore your WAX configuration settings by overwriting the WAX.Config file with a backup WAX.Config file. [See WAX.Config backup explained above]
